Museum without museum

NO TO THE CLOSURE OF THE BRUSSELS MODERN ART MUSEUM

On February 1, 2011  the Brussels Modern Art Museum, a department of Belgium’s Royal Museums of Fine Arts, found itself closed for works. However, it is not to be reopened : it is doomed to be replaced by a “Fin de siècle Museum” dedicated to the 19th century.

The 20th and 21st century collections will no longer be visible: some pieces may occasionally be on view, or be lent to other museums.

Works by international artists such as Bacon, Boltanski, Dali, Jorn, Klee, Moore, Opalka, Paik…, and those of Belgian artists of the calibre of Alechinsky, Broodthaers, Delvaux, Permeke, Spilliaert, Tuymans, Van den Berghe, Vantongerloo, Vermeiren, Wéry, Wouters… would be condemned by this policy to spend an untold number of  years in the reserves, unseen by all.

We demand:
— A permanent open-to-the public home for the 20th and 21st Centuries collections – as soon as next year – whatever other options may be for the future.
— A wide public debate, open to all concerned parties
